Clean & Slip Resistant Flooring

Clean & Slip Resistant Flooring

There is a reason why most flooring materials designed for added traction or slip resistance do not come in white or light colors!

Part of the difficulty associated with Safety Flooring is that their normal surface characteristics that aid in their slip resistance are the same that tend to hold debris and make cleaning / disinfecting difficult.

As detailed above the surface and internal characteristics of most slip retardant floors tend to be the same that hold tracked in contamination, therefore follow the flooring manufacturer’s maintenance procedures consistently. Provide a sufficient level of maintenance attention based on the area’s environment.

What to Look For

The best materials would present an even surface texture with no deep surface undulations. These types of floors are easier to keep clean with conventional rotary machines equipped with polypropylene or nylon bristle brushes. Even better results are obtained by using self-contained cylinder or drum-type machines that efficiently brush up and out the surface debris.

Finishes or coatings are usually not allowed to be used in these areas. Select flooring materials with a permanent factory-applied coating as these offer superior cleanability and resistance to staining.

In addition to these important properties, analyzing traffic patterns or perceived traffic patterns should be a criteria directing flooring decisions. For entrance areas, avoid light colors that reveal dirt tracked in by off-the-street traffic – use darker, more concealing colors. These entrance areas are also subjected too much abrasion and tracking in of materials.

Setting Expectations

During months of bad weather the flooring will take the abuse and then be maintained leaving a clean surface behind. Bold or bright colors can alert pedestrians that the flooring surface is changing.

Document procedures to identify and quickly address problem areas. Slip and fall prevention procedures must be in place and understood by the personnel in every facility. Conduct and document frequent inspections of the facility on a regular basis. Being aware of problem areas allows for quick attention and less liability of slips and falls.
